Unceasingly fascinated with the fecundity of the natural world, Brooklyn native Randi Mates uses 18k gold, sterling silver and such natural effluvia as pyrite, tektite, and rough diamonds in her jewelry line, Aesa, to create pieces that call to mind objects dug up from the deep in the earth or those which are found glowing in the recesses of the sea. Formerly a historian, Mates began training as a classical Greek and Roman metalsmith in 2005 as a way to get out of the dusty libraries that were her stomping ground; Aesa jewelry was born in late 2006 when Mates could no longer ignore the alchemical siren song of the molten metals.
